How to Read the Bible

Reading and studying the Bible is the surest path to finding a living relationship with God! It's not just about knowing facts about God; it's about truly getting to know Him by hearing his voice throughout this living book. If you're unsure where to start, give the S.O.A.P. Method a try! Below, you'll find a simple step-by-step guide to help you structure your time in God's Word. And guess what? This method is ideal for teens and kids, too!

The letters in SOAP stand for the following:

  • S: Scripture – read the selected Bible passage or verse slowly and thoroughly and write it out.

  • O: Observation – make notes on what you observe (Think: who, what, where, when, and why)

  • A: Application – write down your thoughts about how this verse or passage could be applied to your life.

  • P: Prayer – take a moment to write out one or two sentences that express to God how this passage is impacting you.

You can dive deeper into reading the Bible with these Six Steps to Savoring Scripture:

  • posture – Orient the beliefs and dispositions of your heart as you prepare to discern God's voice when reading the Bible.

  • flow – Grasp the flow of thought across a passage in light of its genre and subunits.

  • context – Ponder the passage in view of its historical setting and its place in its literary context within the biblical book.

  • whole bible – Consider how your passage bears witness to Christ and fits into the Bible's redemptive story.

  • Savor god – Ponder, pray to, and praise God in view of whom He is revealing Himself to be as you go back through the passage.

  • faithful response – What is God calling you to do in your life and the world through this passage?
